Anniversary Shenaigans: Perie Wolford Visits, a Giveaway AND a Bonus Cover Reveal!!!

I love the MM community, I really do. I love being able to meet fellow readers and authors that I would never have had the pleasure to meet in my everyday life. I honestly think I'm doing my everyday life wrong, because those people aren't nearly as amazing as my MM community friends. Not even close. That's why unicorns buy lottery tickets (or talk about buying them). One of us will hit the big jackpot one day and the Unicompound will be built. And everyone will live Happily Ever After.

This past year I had the honor of meeting an author who is incredibly talented and unfailingly sweet. You should have the honor of meeting him too and to most definitely read his stories. Let's all give a big round of flailing Kermit arms and a warm welcome to Perie Wolford!

Hi, Guys! First of all, I would like to congratulate unicorns on their first anniversary! You are one of my favorite blogs, keep up the good work!

Actually Ann (aka Peachy Pretty Lashes) was the first blogger to ever review my book, Turning 16. And she was gracious enough to like it and also wrote an amazing review. That really meant a lot to me.

So the Turning 16 series… This is my first gay series ever and the inspiration behind it is the classic 80es movies, so far; I might move into 90es later on (My Best Friend’s Wedding, wink wink).

Sam, the main hero, is a troubled teenager tormented by his “birthday curse”. I actually relate to Sam the most and I really enjoy writing about his adventures. I’m usually a sci-fi geek and writing a romantic comedy was out of my comfort zone. But I like to challenge myself, for one, and also I always wanted to pay tribute to amazing Sixteen Candles movie. I really hope that the result turned out to be entertaining.

Both books, one and two, in Turning 16 series are now available in a Double Feature Edition (and a new cover too).

Turning 16 Books 1 & 2

If you short for cash at the moment, or don’t like Amazon for some reason, both books are available for half price on my website. The next in the series is a short story (part one of the third book), The First Days In College and I’m still working on it, so readers gonna have to wait a little :)

Stick around until the end of this post and you will get an exclusive sneak peak at the cover of my new book, Encounter, due to be released early 2015.

And now it’s time for some Q&A:

1. What are your favorite M/M themes?
Perie: I really enjoy the flirting between two guys who don’t yet know if one another is gay. I think that’s the most interesting part for me and, in my books, I really try to make that part count. The second best is coming out to parents and family, I guess. And, of course, all sorts of romance.

2. What books do you consider Desert Island Keepers?
Perie: My personal selection would be – a) Hunger Games – one of the best books and series I’ve ever encountered, simply amazing; b) Thorn Birds – my all time favorite; c) Geography Club by Brent Hartinger – the first gay book I’ve ever read and my favorite mm author of all times. I simply must plug his new book, The Thing I Didn't Know I Didn't Know, the 5th in Geography Club series which is coming out this December and I can’t wait to read it.

3. If you had to choose to be one magical beast, what would it be and why?
Perie: Umm, I like the idea of Gryphon or maybe a Bird of Phoenix, something winged. If winged stuff wasn’t an option, I’d probably choose to be a werewolf, not because werewolves are trendy, but because I feel a connection to those animals.

4. Do you have author envy? Whose words do you read and think, "GAH, I wish I wrote that!"? Perie: Yes! :) Yes, I have… That would be the Hunger Games… And not just because of the multimillion sales and widely successful movie franchise. I just think that Suzanne Collins managed to put together things that were originally pretty contrasting. Being a screenwriter, I was taught that you can’t mix together two completely different subjects or else you will create a mess. Like werewolves won’t mix well with aliens, or time travel with vampires. But Hunger games is a wonderful example of what an amazing thing can happen when an author manages to skillfully mix such things together. As any indicator of how good Hunger Games is, I have to confess that I’ve been trying to come up with any worthy dystopian idea for the past THREE years and everything comes out to be similar to Hunger Games in varying degree… So, Suzanne Collins took it all and put it into Hunger Games, that’s why it’s so good and that’s why I envy her so much :)

5. Any new projects you're currently working on?
Perie: Yes, I’m currently finishing my new book, the first in new series… It’s a mix of sci-fi (my favorite aliens) and mm genres. It’s titled Encounter and is about a group of young people making crop circles in an attempt to prove it to the world that aliens simply don’t exits, that is until they encounter something that might prove them otherwise. This story is a transfer from a screenplay that I had for years and it mixed greatly into mm genre as well. There’s also another story I have about UFOs and it’s gonna come right after Encounter and gonna be titled Lights. So stay tuned!

Finally, as promised, here’s an exclusive sneak peak at the cover of Encounter (designed by myself, as always).

  5. Ooh, I've never read this author and I love SF so this is clearly a competition aimed my way! Desert Island SF keeper is a tough one because my faves tend to be series - I like Honor Harrington, The Vorpal Blade and Posleen series but for stand out lost-on-an-island-one-book-only it has to be March Upcountry by John Ringo & David Weber.
